The eBook Revolution - Are You Onboard?

If you haven't realized by now, eBooks are here, and they aren't going away anytime soon. Managing how long I stay online visiting my social networking sites, talking with people I'll likely never meet in person, reading books in PDF form, or on my Nook, Kindle, iPad or iPhone - these are all activities I do for work or pleasure. And I know I'm not alone. So have you embraced the eBook Revolution yet? If you're a reader or a writer, the answer is probably, "Yes!"

I decided to pose the question to the online community I frequent. I asked, "Do you download ebooks from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc and if so, do you still buy books in print or not so much?" The responses seemed to be from both camps. Many commented that they loved their paperback books, but did enjoying downloading books. They are shopping online to download their books. Often they are buying from online retailers like Barnes and Noble, Amazon, even Sony and Diesel which are two ebook retailers I was unaware of until recently.

In January 2011, I quietly ventured into the Independent Publishing world (at Smashwords.com) by publishing a Paranormal Romance short story titled The Vampire from Hell: The Beginning (Part 1) (a Free download by the way :). And I have been overwhelmed with the response. Readers have demanded to know what's next for Rayea, the daughter of Satan who is turned into a vampire by her father, Lucifer in Part 1. In less than three months, the story (6,500 words) has been downloaded almost 500 times. Indeed, with this response, I've learned that Rayea has more to tell us.

I'm happy to report that at least three more installments of the Vampire from Hell series are in the works now. These will average between 30,000 to 50,000 words, the size of a novella. Additionally, I'm working with friends in England to create a new website, preparing a marketing strategy for each installment, and writing at a feverish pace. I admit it's a unique way to begin one's fiction writing career, but I think the journey into the eBook Revolution will be worth the ride. I'm just thrilled that I'm writing daily, and that I'm getting closer to a lifelong goal!

As I read other authors' blogs who are selling their books online, I'm fascinated by how well it seems to be going for many, despite the sales strategy they choose or despite the fact they have not published in print before publishing online. Authors are embracing the eBook revolution.

Joe Konrath is a fiction writer working in the mystery, thriller, and horror genres. He is having success with an experiment he decided to perform last month. Read more in his blog article called "The List Experiment." Joe decided to drop the price of a recently published book from $2.99 to $99 just to see how it would sell in about a month's time. He said, "In the 28 days it was 99 cents, and it sold about 20,300 copies." Joe's total in sales for that change in price earned him $7,100 in one month! According to Wikipedia, Joe promotes the Amazon Kindle and the eBook Revolution in general. As of June 2009, he had become one of the top selling authors in Amazon's Kindle Store. And yes, Joe had not published the traditional way (i.e. going through a large publishing house to print only paperbacks or hard cover books) before joining the Independent Publishing world.

Neither has Randy. Randolph Lalonde started publishing with Smashword.com in 2009 as a science fiction writer. Today, after having selling thousands of his ebooks, he writes full time. I emailed Randy last month asking for advice on independent publishing. He suggested always offering the reader a free story for any series you're writing. The free story gives the reader a new story and shows them your writing style, beginning plot, characters, etc which may promote interest in buying your ebooks later. I thought it was sound advice he shared with an author just starting out. You can keep up with Randy's success in the SciFi genre and with his Spinward Fringe Series at http://www.nightbynight.net/.

A few years ago I dreamed of writing books and seeing them on the bookshelves at Barnes and Noble a year later. Now, I can walk into a B&N store anywhere and know that my story is on their web site, waiting to be downloaded by a reader. And I will be writing more books and they will be delivered to the NOOKBook library within months after their publication through Smashwords.com, not a year, or two. And to me, whether I sell any ebooks or not, that IS progress. For upcoming authors/novelists, it's a blessing from the House of G. (Read Part 1 to learn what I mean by that term :))

Feel free to share your comments! The eBook Revolution - Are you onboard?

Thanks again to everyone for your emails, comments, reviews, feedback, advice, and ongoing support!

Hitting the Kitty Cat Lottery

"Alley Alex" is a nickname for the cat I was rescued in 2005. He was 4 months old, abandoned in a parking lot near an alley with every leg broken, except one. Many friends think Alex is named after Alexander Skarsgard since I'm a fan of Eric Northman of True Blood. I don't overly deny it, but Alex was actually named after Alexander the Great. I thought that he needed a warrior's name, a strong name. So maybe it does fit actually. If you watch True Blood, you know Eric is a BAMF and not a vampire to mess with. :)

Check out videos of his progress as Alex healed from February 2005 to May 2005. He "hit the kitty cat lottery" as my husband called it. Oddly enough, I got laid off from a 4 year job that month in February and reserved a large severance package which was a gift from the gods indeed. Healing Alex took right at $3,000 in vet bills. If you see photos of Alex or my other animals on my website, don't mind them. I refer to my two cats and dog as my co-workers since I primarily work from home if I'm not traveling.

"I am already completely enthralled with the plot and characters in this story. Absolutely the best good versus evil fiction I have ever read. The idea that satan would have a child rebel against him, and love man kind, thats genius. I hope to see very much more from this author and especially concerning these characters and storyline. Thank you for the free short, I will gladly pay for more work of this superior quality. Well done!" - Joe V. N.C.

"I loved this part of the book. I can't wait for the rest to come out. I am willing to pay for this amazing book. For a free short book, I think this is an awesome book. If you love vampires, you should check this out, even if you don't like them :)" - coolguy158

The Vampire from Hell makes it to Apple iBooks

A few weeks ago, I talked about "The Vampire from Hell heading to Amazon." This is my first journey into the world of publishing and I'm totally excited about the process, as you can tell. Being a fan of online media and information, I love learning about each step.

This year is the year writing a series called the Vampire from Hell (a 4 part series), and I've jumped into the Indie Publishing ring as well. Currently, I'm fascinated with each step from formatting for online publication to working with affiliate marketing. Smashwords is the publishing company I'm using. And if you're interested in publishing online, I strongly suggest you check them out.

After getting approved for more distribution opportunities, I'm watching to see where Rayea's story lands first. Today I'd like to report an update to that article because Part One is on Apple iBooks, the application for Apple's iPad, iPod touch and iPhone. You can download it from the App store to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and read it on the go. It's a free download by the way.

As I mentioned in the article above, The Vampire from Hell: The Beginning - Part One is headed to (specifically) the following sites:
What's The Vampire from Hell about?
Rayea isn't daddy's little girl, even if he is the most powerful fallen angel around. He wants her to take an active role in the family business. But she's not interested in his schemes for world domination. Instead she wants to spend her time shopping on the Internet, rescuing humans from a horrific eternity, and practicing martial arts with her seven foot hellhound. Then one day everything changes.

You can download the story at Smashwords or GoodReads too.

Again, thanks to all the interest and support you guys have shown me. I'm still overwhelmed and blown away. My journey into the Indie Publishing World continues.

Praise for The Vampire from Hell at Apple iBooksSince its release in January, The Vampire from Hell: The Beginning (Part 1) has been getting promising reviews on Apple iBooks. I have to send a huge shout out to everyone who is excited about the series. Part 2 is coming soon!

"I just finished reading Ally Thomas' book and have to say I'm very impressed! The story is new and unique, with endless potential. It felt refreshing to read a vampire story that differentiated from the norm and struck out on its own path. Needless to say I can't wait for the next installment to find out what happens next!" - The Demon 53

"Loved it. Can not wait for the next one. Good story. Love the story line and characters so far." - Vamp94

"You did a great job! I am sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for more!!" - Tkortiz

"This book has great potential. Can't wait to see what happens in the next installment. This is a must read!" - Bethyanny

"Endless potential!!! Can't wait for more. Please upload soon." - Asheardelite

    Thank You!

THANK YOU!!! Part One of my first book, The Vampire from Hell: The Beginning, has been downloaded over 400 times so far! I just wanna say thank you to everyone who’s checked it out. I'm blown away with your interest and feeback! Keep it coming!

Rayea's Revelation - Part 2 in the Vampire from Hell series is in the works.

Keep the Chedipe Vampire away from your man's toes!

I'm always on the hunt for interesting information in other cultures, especially related to the vampire myth. I discovered this today on a new Facebook page I subscribed to recently called Vampires. Sometimes you can figure out unique ways to incorporate even the little bit of the information into your writing and I think the Chedipe has potential :)

The Chedipe (which literally means “prostitute”) is a vampire prostitute in Indian folklore. In paintings, she is depicted riding a tiger through the night bathed in the moon light, without any clothes on, I might add. Imagery? Hello! I already see this chic riding bareback through the forest! She prefers to seek out men, but has been known to take out a full household. I suppose a frat house would be a party feast for the Chedipe.

To subdue or charm her victims, she casts a spell to keep them asleep. From there she immediately sucks blood from the victim's neck. Well actually not his neck, but his toes! Sometimes, it's said that the Chedipe attacks her victim in the form disguised as a tiger with human legs. This folklore story just screams for a character to be written into a Vampire novel, doesn't it?

    Marriage Woes

The Chedipe is a mistress who doesn't know when to leave a good man alone. With repeated attacks and sexual assaults on her selected man, the Chedipe often weakens the marriage bond between the man and his wife. She also taints the bloodline for future children. She delights in destroying the couple's love, trust, and purity. In addition to taking the victim's blood, she enjoys robbing him of happiness and bliss by her actions.

    Defeating the Chedipe Vampire

It's suggested that a victim of the Chedipe seek treatment if he feels drained of energy or intoxicated the morning after. I'd suggest that is the less of his worries if he's stepping out on his wife, but that's another discussion. If the man does not do something, the Chedipe will return. This will ensure that the marriage is destroyed and the victim will eventually waste away and die from all of the bloody toe sucking going on. Serves him right, you may be saying!

Sidenote: I would suggest to the guys if you're gonna pick up a Chedipe at the bar, don't let her know where you live. That might work without having to go through the next steps.

    Enough Already

How might your man get rid of this Chedipe?

A good way to defeat the Chedipe is for you or your man to invite over a lot of friends for an incense burning sleepover, not a very manly activity, but necessary, if the Chedipe keeps showing up on the lawn at night. Before the sleepover, place holy items around the house such as crosses, bibles, bottles of holy water. I'd even suggest getting an inflatable Pope for the front yard, like a big Santa Clause, but I'm not sure they make those. Anyways... At the party, designate someone to burn incense all the time from beginning in the morning, til evening and through the night. Find someone reliable.

If you can designate one person who stays awake throughout the night, burning incense, this will frighten the Chedipe away. The presence of an awake person maintaining the rituals of sacred protection frightens the Chedipe, causing her to seek out another household in the neighborhood to attack.

Hopefully this will work, and you won't wake up the next morning to a large room filled with your husband and his friends, limping around dazed and confused with bloody toes.

    Icy Footprints

This week has been an unusally crazy week, weather wise especially. We got several inches of snow and ice Monday night and it's shut things down. In the South, we don't have salt to take care of clearning the roads. We usually get by with sand. And with the temperatures being in the teens, sand doesn't really help.

JJ, my dog and I got out each day to slip and slide on the ice. He'd pull me along and when I'd start to slip, I'd step on to the grass and crunch along in the snow. My dog decided quick trips around the block was all the walking he wanted to do. And I had to agree with him. Even in my double layered pants and shirts with a coat, gloves, scarf to boot, it was still cold. The wind was the devil this week with its howling every day and its bitter sting on my face. That is not something I have felt a lot in the South. I took this snapshot of footprints frozen in the ice.

But I have to admit a week of snow and ice in February is a nice change of pace. I was starting to get spring fever early, too early and this helped remind me Winter is not done with us just yet. I think my cat had the best idea on how to deal with the weather. He got to stay inside all week. Click here to see a photo I snapped of him that I put on my Tumblr page.

    Writing is . . .

I'm a fan of quotes. I'm always searching for those that sum up the human condition for me. I have many books of quotes in my library (paperbacks and ebooks) and I like to start my week out with one that exhibits how I'm feeling at that moment, so I thought I'd share them here on my blog too.

Today's quote I selected is by Nadine Gordimer. She's a writer and political activist from South Africa. Currently, she's moved from her main cause of addressing apartheid to becoming active in HIV/AIDS causes. She's 87 years old.

“Writing is making sense of life. You work your whole life and perhaps you've made sense of one small area.” - Nadine Gordimer
